Oral Hygiene Tips:
Keep using an interdental brush and floss.
Single stuffed brush will help if you have periodontal pockets.
I will help you to find a correct size of interdental brush and explain everything.

Gum Disease & Your Health: More Than Just Your Smile
Healthy Gums, Healthy Body
Your gums do more than hold your teeth in place — they play a vital role in your overall health. Research has shown a clear link between gum disease (also called periodontal disease) and serious health conditions, including:
-
Heart disease
-
Stroke
-
Diabetes
-
Respiratory disease
-
Pregnancy complications
When your gums are inflamed or infected, harmful bacteria can enter your bloodstream, triggering inflammation in other parts of your body. This is why looking after your gums is just as important as looking after your teeth.
What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease happens when plaque — a sticky film of bacteria — builds up along and under the gum line. Without regular cleaning, this bacteria irritates the gums, causing redness, swelling, and bleeding.
Gum disease has two main stages:
Gingivitis – The earliest stage. Gums may be red, swollen, and bleed when you brush. This stage is reversible with good cleaning and professional care.
Periodontitis – An advanced stage where gums start pulling away from teeth, forming pockets that trap bacteria. This can lead to bone loss, loose teeth, and eventually tooth loss.
The Link Between Gum Disease & General Health
Scientific studies have shown that:
-
Heart health – People with gum disease are at higher risk of heart attacks and strokes due to inflammation in blood vessels.
-
Diabetes – Gum disease can make it harder to control blood sugar, and diabetes can make gum problems worse.
-
Pregnancy – Gum disease has been linked to premature birth and low birth weight.
-
Respiratory health – Bacteria from the mouth can travel to the lungs, contributing to infections.
Taking care of your gums isn’t just about avoiding tooth loss — it’s about protecting your long-term health.
Signs You May Have Gum Disease
-
Red, swollen, or tender gums
-
Bleeding when brushing or flossing
-
Persistent bad breath
-
Gums pulling away from teeth
-
Loose teeth or changes in your bite
If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to book an appointment as soon as possible.
Preventing Gum Disease
Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits are the best defence against gum disease. At Danbury Dental Care, we recommend:
-
Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
-
Flossing or using interdental brushes every day
-
Having Airflow teeth cleaning or hygiene appointments every 6 months (or more often if advised)
-
Avoiding smoking, which increases gum disease risk
Treating Gum Disease
Early gum disease (gingivitis) can usually be reversed with improved home care and professional cleaning. Advanced gum disease (periodontitis) may need more intensive treatments to clean under the gums and protect your teeth.
Our dental hygiene team uses gentle, effective methods like Airflow cleaning to remove harmful bacteria and help restore gum health.
Protect Your Smile & Your Health
Looking after your gums is an investment in your whole body’s wellbeing. Whether you want to prevent problems or treat early signs of gum disease, we’re here to help.
